Negotiating: The Art of Getting What You Want Without Being a Bully or Caving In

Negotiation takes place several times daily in all areas of our lives - with coworkers, customers, bosses, family members, communities, and friends.
Kristina Evey, owner of Centric Strategies and professional speaker, trainer, and coach on all things related to the customer experience, believes that the goal should be to negotiate in a manner that honors the interests of the end result desired, not the position of the parties involved.  Click here to read Kristina Evey's full bio.
Evey will cover the four points of a truly successful negotiation.
  • Separate the people from the problem - participants should come to see themselves as working side by side, attacking the problem at hand, not each other.
  • Focus on interests, not positions - this overcomes the drawback of focusing on people’s stated positions when the object of a negotiation is to satisfy their underlying interests.
  • Creating options for mutual gain - setting aside a designated time within which to think up a wide ration of possible solutions that advance shared interests and creatively reconcile differing interests.
  • Insist on using objective criteria - neither party needs to give in to the other; both can defer to a solution using a fair standard to determine an objective outcome.
Participants will leave with tools to reinforce the methods and strategies listed above to assist them during their own negotiations and conflict resolutions.
